Writing Prompt #65

Writing Prompt #65

Love Stories

No matter what she did, the children saw love stories in every picture.

After Monday’s prompt, it seemed fitting that I give one that felt a little more upbeat.  I drew inspiration for this prompt from a Girl Scout troop I lead for a time.  We happened to be working on a painting badge and I was showing them my Pinterest boards for inspiration.  However, it didn’t matter what kind of image I showed them because the only thing that they saw was romances.  I’m smiling thinking back on the lovestruck looks on eight and nine-year-old faces.

I challenge you to write some sort of piece in which children view the world through a softer and more rose-tinted glass than their adult counterparts.  They might be a little naive but sometimes we need a child’s view on things.

If this prompt isn’t really what you’re looking for today then check out some of my other prompts.  Remember, anything you write is one hundred percent yours.  No need to give credit.  However, if you would like to share your piece with me, I would love to give it a read.  Send me the link via social media or leave it in the comments below.  I might even share it with other readers.

Shattering

It was then that she knew her heart was shattering into pieces.

A bit of a sad prompt for your Monday morning.  However, I challenge you to write some sort of piece in which your main character finds their heart breaking into a million different pieces. What happens and how do they cope with it?

If this prompt isn’t really filling your need for the day then check out some of my other prompts.   Anything you write belongs solely to you, no credit necessary.  Though if you’d like to share your work based on this prompt, or any of my other prompts, then please feel free to share it with me!  Connect with me on social media and send me a link.  Or put it in the comments below.  I might even like it so much that I recommend it to other readers as well!

Writing Prompt #63

“Oath”

Close your eyes.  Take a breath.  You stand in the middle of a stained glass room with an altar at the center.  This is the holiest place in the castle.  In the city.  Who are you in this fantasy and who is the person in front of you and what is the oath they have made to you?  Are you two lovers hoping that one comes back from a foolish war?  Are you a betrayed civilian who has asked a sympathetic mercenary to track down the one who wronged you?  Set the scene.  Is the sun pouring through the stained glass or is it raining to give the entire setting a foreboding feeling?  Open your eyes.  Now, tell this story.

Writing Prompt #63

He swore an oath to her in the holiest place in the citadel before he left.  He was bound by the gods to honor it… upon pain of death.

Writing Prompt #62

“Scare Me”

Your character has an unshakeable demeanor.  When faced with a situation that would have most others shaking, they stare point blank into the abyss.  Nothing scares them.  Perhaps it is bravado.  It very well could be.  Your character might have a history that has desensitized them to their current situation. Describe that history or tell us why they aren’t afraid.  What is it that they should be afraid of?  How do your other characters react?  Is this an expected declaration or does it take them off guard?  Who or what is talking to them?  Write this story.

Writing Prompt #62

“You say that like it will scare me.”

Writing Prompt #61

“Winter”

Winter is beautiful.  It paints a picture of pure white snow, glistening evergreen trees, and an undisturbed quiet.  However, imagine for a moment if winter came weeks or even months early.  What does this mean?  Is this perhaps the start of science fiction thriller in which scientist race against the clock to fix whatever has thrown the seasons out of order.  Or could this be the beginning of a fantasy adventure in which a farm girl must face off against an evil sorcerer.  Take a moment and let your creativity run wild.

Writing Prompt #61

Winter was early.  Too early.

Writing Prompt #60

“Guard”

Your character is a brave adventurer.  They have traveled long and far in search of some grand treasure that lies in wait in a long abandoned temple.  Or at least that’s what they assume.  When your character to the nearest town, they hear stories of a guard that has been tasked with protecting the temple and it’s treasure.  It’s said that they wield a legendary blade made of flame and smoke.  However, despite the warning, your character remains steadfast in their decision to pursue the treasure.  How do they go about planning for their confrontation?  Will everything go as they planned or will something unexpected suddenly change the game?  More importantly, why does your character think this treasure is worth the risk of the guard?

Writing Prompt #60

“The temple guard will cut you down with a sword of fire before you can even come within sight of the treasure.”

Writing Prompt #59

“Snowy Journey”

It is cold.  So cold that you can see your breath every time you exhale.  Each inhale is a stab at your lungs.  The snowy journey you’re about to set out on is one of great importance.  Your horse paws at the ground impatiently, kicking up some of snow that’s accumulated on the ground already.  You have your reservations about the trip before you but it is absolutely imperative that you reach your destination.  What is it that pulls you away from home on such a cold, snowy day and why is it so important?  What challenges do you now face with the impending weather?  Is it the dead of winter or just the start of it? Why must it be you that completes it?

Writing Prompt #59

Fluffy, white snow collected on the horse’s neck.  The journey wasn’t only going to be a long one but a cold one as well.

Writing Prompt #58

“Savage”

A monster stands in front of your character.  Their reputation befits them. Others call them a savage.  A beast that has committed unspeakable evils in the past.  However, your character has just discovered they must work with this monster. What is the reason your character must team up with this monster?  How does your character react to this line uttered by the monster?  How does this monster say it?  Perhaps they leer down at your character and give a twisted smile.  Maybe they are more somber in their response.  Is it possible that the monster is truly as savage as their nickname insinuates?  Tell this story!

Writing Prompt #58

“They call me a savage.  You can tell me when this is all over if it is an appropriate nickname.”

Writing Prompt #57

“Fireflies”

The inspiration for this prompt came from a campout that I did during the summer.  When the sky got dark there were hundreds of fireflies in the trees that surrounded the field.  Every time they lit up it looked like there were stars hanging just above us.  It was probably the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

Writing Prompt #57

Fireflies sparkled and danced in the branches.  At night they looked like stars close enough to touch.

Writing Prompt #56

“World Portal”

If there are two things I love to read, they are portal fantasies and stories about parallel universes.  This prompt combines the two.  What could be so important that your character’s alternate self needs their help?  How do the two characters differ?  They might be the same character essentially but how have their experiences shaped them.  Maybe one world is like our own, without magic but with technology, and the other relies solely on magic.  Or perhaps the alternate world has technology that’s way more advanced than our own.

Writing Prompt #56

You find a mirror at an antique store.  You decide to buy it but when you get it home, you realize buying it was no coincidence.  It’s a portal to another world and your counterpart needs your help.
